How to Best Optimize Images for a Website?

Three rules: compress before uploading (WebP reduces file size 25 to 35% versus JPEG at equal quality), size images to their actual display dimensions rather than scaling down in CSS, and use lazy loading so below-the-fold images do not block initial page load. For ecommerce product images, target under 100KB per file. A 1-second delay in page load time reduces conversions by around 7%, and images are usually the heaviest assets on the page.
