What is A/B testing and do I need it?

What A/B testing actually is
A/B testing (also called split testing) sends half your traffic to version A and half to version B of a page element, then measures which drives more conversions. At scale, it’s powerful. The problem is that “scale” is relative, and most e-commerce stores underestimate how much traffic they need before results become reliable.
A test running at 80% statistical confidence with 1,000 monthly visitors will take 3-6 months to detect a 10% conversion lift. By then, seasonal variation, ad campaigns, and algorithm changes have contaminated the data. You’re not measuring your test anymore.
When A/B testing makes sense
The minimum threshold I work with is 10,000 monthly sessions per tested page, with a goal of reaching 200-400 conversions per variant before calling a result. That means:
- A product page converting at 2% needs roughly 10,000-20,000 visitors per variant
- A checkout page converting at 40% needs far fewer: around 500-1,000 per variant
- Homepage elements often need the most traffic because micro-conversion rates are lower
If your store meets these thresholds, A/B testing is the most rigorous way to validate changes before rolling them out sitewide. Tools like Google Optimize (now sunset), VWO, or Optimizely handle the statistics automatically, but you still need to interpret results carefully.
The case for skipping A/B tests at lower traffic
Below 10,000 monthly visitors, there’s a better path. Years of CRO research have produced a solid body of evidence about what works in e-commerce: clear call-to-action placement, trust signals near checkout, product image quality, simplified form fields. These aren’t hypotheses — they’re validated patterns backed by thousands of studies.
Implementing these directly from a UX audit, without testing, will typically lift conversions 15-30% in 4-6 weeks. That’s faster and more reliable than running underpowered tests for six months.
Common A/B testing mistakes
Testing too many variables at once. If you change the headline, button color, and image simultaneously, you can’t attribute the result. Test one element at a time.
Stopping tests too early. A result that looks significant at day 3 is often noise. Wait for statistical significance AND business significance — a 0.1% lift isn’t worth the implementation cost even if it’s statistically real.
Ignoring segment differences. A change that helps mobile users may hurt desktop users. Always segment results by device type at minimum.
Testing for the sake of testing. Every test has an opportunity cost. Prioritize tests where the potential lift is meaningful and the hypothesis is strong.
How to prioritize what to test
Use the ICE framework: Impact (how much could this move the needle?), Confidence (how strong is the evidence that this is a problem?), and Ease (how fast can you implement it?). Score each hypothesis 1-10 on each dimension, multiply, and work down the ranked list.
Pair this with heatmap data (Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity) and session recordings to identify where users actually struggle. Tests based on behavioral data outperform tests based on assumptions by a wide margin.
